What is Self-driving GTM engine?
A self-driving GTM engine is a go-to-market system that runs its own loop: it senses what changed, decides what to do about it, acts on the account, and records the result, without a person starting each step. A human sets the goal and approves anything that reaches a customer, which is what separates it from a system running unattended end to end.
The test is what happens on a Monday when nobody logs in. A dashboard that recalculates is reporting. A sequencer that keeps sending is automation, because the decision was made once, by a person, when the sequence was built. An engine is self-driving when the choice of what to do next is made from current data by the system, and the people spend their time approving and correcting rather than operating.
It is a range rather than a switch, and the useful measure is how much of the loop runs unsupervised and where the approval gate sits. Enrichment, scoring and routing are usually safe to run with nobody watching. Anything that puts a message in front of a customer usually is not. That line is drawn per play, not once for the whole platform, which is why a serious answer to "how autonomous is it" is a table and not a yes.
What it needs underneath is unglamorous: one data model the whole system agrees on, typed tools that perform units of work, plays that fire when data changes, and written context an agent reads before it decides. Bolting an agent onto a stack that has none of those gives it nothing to act on and no record of what it did.
What is the difference between a self-driving GTM engine and marketing automation?
Where the decision lives. Marketing automation runs the steps a person configured, in the order they configured them, and keeps running them until someone edits the flow. A self-driving GTM engine decides which step is right for an account from current data, and reaches a different decision when the data changes. Automation repeats a past decision; an engine makes a present one.
Is a self-driving GTM engine just AI agents?
Agents are one part of it. An engine also needs a data model of accounts and contacts, tools that perform work with typed inputs and outputs, plays that fire on change, and the context that says what the company sells and to whom. An agent without those has nothing to act on, no way to act reliably, and leaves no trace of what it decided.
What does a human still do?
Three things. Set the goal and the constraints. Approve anything irreversible, which in practice means anything that reaches a customer or spends money. Correct the policy when a decision was wrong, so the correction applies to the next thousand accounts rather than to one.
