A GTM engineer builds and operates the revenue system: the data infrastructure, enrichment, scoring, routing, and automation that decide who a company sells to, when, and with what message. Sales teams talk to customers; GTM engineers build the machine that makes those conversations happen.
The title is used loosely, and that creates confusion. In practice it covers three different jobs:
- Revenue systems engineering: building the data, scoring, routing, and automation layer of the revenue engine. This is the emerging role this page is about.
- Internal software engineering for GTM teams: software or data engineers building internal tools, sitting in an engineering org.
- Technical pre-sales work occasionally labeled “GTM engineer” by companies that mean something closer to a sales engineer.
Too often, the first meaning gets reduced to outbound ops: a Clay table and a sequencer. That scope is real but reductive, and the rest of this page shows why.
GTM engineering is about structuring the revenue engine of a company. This is the plumbing behind sales efficiency and revenue growth, not only topline acquisition as most job offers suggest. The closest ancestor is the growth hacking of ten years ago, where you picked your north star anywhere on the AARRR funnel depending on the metric you wanted to move. For recurring-revenue teams, the Bowtie model (Winning by Design) has since replaced AARRR, and a GTM engineer should be able to build plumbing that moves any stage of it: topline acquisition, MQL to SQL conversion, churn prevention, upsell and cross-sell detection. The post-sale half of the bowtie is not theoretical, and the market is already hiring for it: 35% of recent GTM engineer job descriptions include post-sales scope (churn, upsell, renewal), not only acquisition. Veriff, a Cargo customer, connected billing and product-usage signals and scaled upsell opportunity detection from 42 to 363 monthly opportunities, an 8.6x increase. Same architecture, pointed at expansion instead of acquisition.
GTM engineering is the architecture of an engine.
Everything below is built from primary data: a global sample of GTM engineer job offers posted between April 17 and July 16, 2026. The corpus funnel: 1,487 postings collected, 1,350 unique full-text descriptions analyzed, 1,154 offers after deduplication, 711 currently verified-open on our live board, across 874 companies. Methodology is at the bottom of the page. Not opinions about the role: what hiring teams actually wrote.
TL;DR #

The definition #
The title is new. The problem is not. Every revenue team already had someone duct-taping the CRM to the enrichment tool to the sequencer at 11pm. The GTM engineer is that job made explicit, staffed deliberately, and given ownership of outcomes instead of tickets.
And the job descriptions are telling about what the job is not. Of 1,350 analyzed, only 2% mention meetings booked and 2% mention quota, the classic SDR scorecard. 68% talk about revenue, 59% about pipeline. Companies are not describing a better SDR. They are describing an engineer whose output is a system.
What a GTM engineer actually does #
Across the corpus, the responsibilities converge on five blocks:
- Data infrastructure. Owning the account and contact data layer: sourcing, enrichment, deduplication, and sync between the warehouse, the CRM, and activation tools. Enrichment appears in 50% of JDs, CRM ownership in 57%, data quality and coverage in 25%.
- Scoring and prioritization. Building the models that decide which accounts and leads deserve attention: ICP fit, intent signals, product usage. Scoring in 28% of JDs, ICP work in 17%.
- Routing and orchestration. The logic that moves a lead from signal to owner to sequence without a human copy-pasting between tabs. Routing in 31%, webhooks in 17%, attribution in 18%.
- Outbound systems. Not sending the emails: building the machine that sources, enriches, personalizes, and schedules them. Cold email and outbound machinery in 46% of JDs, sequencer tooling in 39%.
- AI workflows. Agents that research accounts, draft first touches, mine call transcripts, and qualify inbound, with the GTM engineer as the person who builds, evaluates, and supervises them. LLMs, agents, and prompt engineering appear in 70% of JDs, the highest single technical category in the corpus.
On block one, our position has not moved in years: the data warehouse is the system of record a revenue engine should be built on. We were advocating this in writing before it was consensus, and the 360-degree customer view CDPs promised a decade ago is finally real, in the warehouse. Every revenue engine should start from a clean, deduplicated, unified data layer. That principle is how Cargo models data.
Operator move: the tell that separates a real GTM engineer role from a rebranded SDR job is ownership of systems versus ownership of activity. If the JD measures the role in meetings booked, it is an SDR job with better tooling. If it measures pipeline coverage, data quality, or conversion by stage, it is engineering.
Where they sit in the org, and who they report to #
Only 16% of postings state a reporting line explicitly: 210 of 1,350, of which 164 could be confidently classified. Among those:

Our reading of the pattern, by company shape:
- Early stage: the GTM engineer reports to a founder or the first sales leader and IS the revenue systems function.
- Scale-up (the 51 to 200 employee bucket is the single biggest in the dataset): the role lands inside RevOps or a nascent GTM Operations team, usually as its first engineering hire.
- Larger organizations: dedicated GTM Systems and GTM Engineering teams appear; “GTM Engineering Lead” and “SVP of GTM Technology” show up as hiring managers in our data. The role stops being a person and becomes a function.
The 20% reporting into Marketing is the detail most people miss: in PLG and demand-gen-heavy companies, the GTM engineer is effectively a growth engineer pointed at pipeline instead of activation.
What the postings emphasize #
We counted which outcomes job descriptions talk about. This measures emphasis, not formal comp plans, and the pattern is stark:

Secondary outcomes in mature postings: NRR and retention (8%), sales velocity and cycle time (8%), deliverability (7%). The absence is as telling as the presence: the activity scorecard is essentially gone.
The leverage math #
Why companies pay six figures for this role. Our conviction, from running this model twice: a team of 10 reps with the right GTM infrastructure can produce the results of 30 without it. Run it the other way and the same team multiplies its impact. The mechanism is a tiered engagement model where human attention is spent only where it converts:

The receipt behind that conviction: before founding Cargo, the founders ran this model at Spendesk, where the in-house engine fed more than 200 sales reps on autopilot across 3 markets and brought the meeting-booked rate from 5% to 15%.
Should a GTM engineer carry a variable? #
Almost no job description answers this, so we will. Before Cargo existed, the founders ran this function at Spendesk, built on Snowflake, Hightouch, and custom scripts, before any of today’s tooling. The team was measured on three deliverables:
- Accounts allocated to reps from signals: how many qualified accounts the system put in front of sales.
- Accounts reactivated: closed-lost and stale accounts revived on new context. A fundraising event on a closed-lost opportunity reactivates the account and reallocates it to the past owner or a new rep.
- Tier-3 coverage: lower-priority prospects engaged entirely by automated sequences, so reps never touch them.
And on efficiency: meeting-booked conversion moved from 12.5% to 16.2% (a 30% uplift), opportunity conversion from 5% to 7% (40%), with an internal Sales NPS above 8 as the quality gate so volume could never be gamed at the expense of account quality.
What we recommend from that experience:
- Default: market base plus company bonus, like any engineering role. Shipping and maintaining the system is the job, not the bonus.
- An outcome bonus (5 to 15%) only when the conditions exist: a stable charter, trusted instrumentation, enough volume to measure, and real authority over the system being measured.
- If you add one, compose it from three things: systems shipped and adopted by the team, one conversion or coverage outcome measured against an agreed baseline on a defined cohort, and a quality gate (data correctness, rep adoption, internal NPS). Measure over six to twelve months; quarters are too noisy at typical opportunity counts.
- Avoid percent-of-assisted-revenue. Attribution is gameable, and “assisted” inflates until it means everything.

The tools employers name most, grouped by what they do:
- CRM: Salesforce, HubSpot
- Enrichment and data: Clay, Apollo, ZoomInfo, Clearbit
- Automation and orchestration: n8n, Zapier, Make
- Sales engagement: Outreach, Salesloft, Instantly, Smartlead, Lemlist
- Warehouse and data stack: Snowflake, BigQuery, dbt, Hightouch, Segment
- Conversation intelligence: Gong
None of the six categories above is “GTM infrastructure,” and that is the point. The layer that unifies them, the data models, orchestration, agents, governance, and observability, is only now emerging as its own category. It barely shows up in today’s job descriptions yet, which is what an emerging category looks like before the hiring language catches up. Job descriptions are a trailing indicator: they name the tools companies already bought. Spend data leads. In Ramp’s April 2026 Top Software Vendors report, built on card and bill-pay data from 50K+ businesses, the sales execution and orchestration category is breaking out, and Cargo, our own product, is on the trending list (breakout growth relative to size). The JD corpus describes the stack of the last cycle; the spend data shows the next one being assembled.
The edge (where the market is going)
- LLM and agent workflows: 70% of JDs, the largest technical category in the corpus
- Evaluation and supervision of AI output, not just generation
- Deliverability engineering as email costs rise
What AI actually does in a revenue engine #
70% of job descriptions ask for AI skills, and they increasingly name the tool: in the most recent month’s postings, Claude or Claude Code appears in 38% and OpenAI or GPT in 24%, the AI-agent layer becoming as standard a requirement as the CRM. We run agents in production every day, and the honest split matters more than the percentage.
Works today:
- Account research and meeting prep. The most reliable agent job in the engine. No contest.
- Slack agents for quick actions. A rep asks, the agent executes against the engine, human stays in the loop.
- Building the tooling itself. AI writing custom interfaces and assembling workflows works, and it is why the technical floor of this role dropped.
- Copywriting, with a caveat that most people miss. With strong guidelines, AI drafts are fine. But the reply rate lever is not the prose, it is the offer behind it. A badly written email inviting someone to dinner with the CEOs of Anthropic and OpenAI gets replies; a beautifully written email with nothing behind it does not. The GTM engineer’s real copywriting job is architecture: the psychological angle (loss aversion versus benefit), and the next-best-offer behind the message: a dinner, a personalized landing page, a custom-built cockpit, a free audit. Something that delivers actual value.
Harder than it looks:
- Agentic scoring. Probabilistic generation is a poor substrate for reproducible math. We learned it building our own sales-readiness scoring and moved the computation into deterministic tools, keeping the agent for judgment. The line between the two is the design decision that separates engines that hold from engines that drift.
Which sets up the question we ask in interviews (below): knowing when to use a deterministic workflow and when to use an agent is becoming the core design skill of the role.
GTM engineer vs RevOps vs growth vs sales engineer #

The distinction with RevOps is charter, not talent: strong RevOps teams build, and production GTM engineering needs governance. RevOps runs and governs the revenue process on an operating cadence; the GTM engineer’s charter is to build new machinery. In smaller companies one person carries both; as complexity grows, the roles split.
When to hire a GTM engineer #
Hire against the bottleneck, not the headcount:

Signals you are not ready for the hire: no clear ICP, no owner for the sales process itself, not enough data to activate, or no team prepared to act on what the system surfaces. Fix those first; a GTM engineer multiplies a motion that exists, they cannot invent one.
If you go fractional or agency instead, one filter separates the real ones from the rest: listen to how they describe the work. If the conversation is about outbound campaigns, you are buying list building with a sequencer attached. If it is about the revenue engine, the data layer, the tiers, the routing, you may have found an architect. Then make them show you an architecture they own: the data model, the routing logic, the documentation, the handoff. GTM engineering is revenue architecture, not list building that ships leads to a sequencer.
How to interview one
Three questions do most of the work:
- “What did you actually build with AI that you’re proud of?” You are listening for an artifact: a system, an agent, a workflow that exists and runs. If the honest answer is “I use ChatGPT or Claude through the chat interface,” that is a consumer of AI, not a builder with it; for this role the difference is the whole job.
- “How would you know if you’re performing in this role?” The question flips the card. Strong candidates reach for system metrics, deliverables, and outcomes for the reps. Weak ones reach for activity.
- “When do you use a deterministic workflow versus an agent, and why?” There is no single right answer, which is the point: you are watching someone reason about reliability, cost, and judgment at the design level. It is the best debate we know for surfacing real production experience.
The first 90 days #
The most common failure mode of the role is not technical. It is building before understanding. Great building without business acumen is useless: if you do not understand the daily life of a rep, what exactly are you improving? The sequence that works:
- Weeks 1 to 2: learn the market and the personas. Meet the reps. Listen to sales calls, a lot of them: Max was the biggest listener of sales calls at Spendesk during his time as growth ops. Join customer calls where you can. In parallel, audit the CRM, CLI-first: account counts, duplicates, attribute hygiene, the same field living twice under two names.
- Weeks 3 to 4: audit the stack and the funnel. What marketing runs, what sales runs, and whether the funnel is trackable end to end: volume, conversion rate, and scale potential per acquisition channel, then every stage conversion (MQL to SQL, SQL to pilot, pilot to closed-won, churn). Talk to every stakeholder who owns a piece.
- Month 2 onward: build the V0 of the engine, then never stop. Clean data foundation first, then TAM built and scored, then signals, then rules of engagement per tier. From there the operating rhythm is permanent: keep building the engine, and place one or two big bets per month on top of it. The engine compounds; the bets spike.
And document everything as you ship. Building without enablement is just ego: a system the reps do not understand is a system that does not exist.
Treat this as a pattern of priorities, not a rigid template: scope varies by company, an acute routing or data fire may deserve a fix in week one, and the TAM, scoring, and engagement rules are built with sales leadership, not handed down to them.
Who hires GTM engineers, and what they pay #
- Seniority: 75% of postings are mid-level, 20% senior. Fewer than 3% are junior. This is a second-job title, not a first-job title.
- Geography: the US accounts for roughly half of postings, followed by India, Germany, the UK, Canada, and France.
- Work mode: 31% remote, 24% hybrid.
- Compensation: median US salary is $159K, P25 $135K, P75 $190K (n=509 disclosed US salaries, Apr to Jul 2026). Senior roles clear $175K median; staff-level roles $219K; and founding GTM engineer roles (the first GTM hire, usually with equity) command a premium, around $195K median.

How to become one #
The two on-ramps we see in the data and in our own customer base:
- Technical people moving toward revenue. Engineers who learn the sales processes and funnel math. Their gap is business judgment, and it closes fast with exposure to real deals.
- Revenue people moving toward systems. Ops and growth marketers who learn SQL, APIs, and automation. Their gap is technical confidence, and AI has collapsed how long that takes to build.
Operator move: the portfolio beats the resume. One documented system (a scoring model, an enrichment waterfall, an outbound machine) with before/after numbers is worth more than any certification. Hiring managers in this market are reading for evidence you have built, not evidence you have studied.
Where the role goes next #
Who thought, a few years ago, that GitHub would hold a company’s GTM repository?
No one.
AI gave every builder the feeling of being technical: anyone can generate code now. But as the architecture goes code-first, the real engineering disciplines arrive with it: repositories, version control, logs and run observability, context layers, evaluation. GTM has never been closer to actual engineering. That is why companies now hire data engineers shifting into GTM, and why GTM people are raising their technical quotient: to control the engine instead of running a black box whose technical debt will explode one day.
It does explode. Alma, now a Cargo customer, ran their motion on more than 40 n8n automations: no version control, no single owner, logic duplicated across workflows nobody dared touch. Every new hire inherited a black box. The migration was not from one tool to another; it was from an undocumented pile of automations to a versioned, observable engine. That is the direction of the discipline: GTM as code. Revenue logic that is versionable, testable, explainable, replayable.
Our prediction for where the title itself lands: data engineering, data analytics, and GTM engineering converge, because they are three parts of the same job of building the engine. Data engineering is the plumbing, analytics is the observability, GTM engineering is the business acumen. The teams that see it first will hire for the intersection, not the silos.
The title will keep evolving. The direction will not: revenue teams are becoming engineering teams, and the GTM engineer is the first hire that makes it official.
